大谷翔平飆出161公里火球，追平「例行賽、日本投手最快球速」紀錄。不過，對手軟銀鷹隊監督秋山幸二卻說，大谷的160公里火球，感覺上像是152公里左右，因此下達「鎖定快速球」策略。

這一戰，軟銀打者按照賽前計畫，瞄準大谷的快速球。鷹隊9支安打裡面，有7支擊中大谷155公里以上的火球。

為何大谷的火球，無法成為克敵致勝的武器，反倒成了對手狙擊的目標？

「全力摧出來的速球還被打，也許有初速、尾速的落差。」軟銀鷹隊打擊教練藤井康雄說。言下之意，大谷的160公里火球，還不到凍結對方打者的地步。

以今年明星賽第二戰為例，大谷飆了12球160公里以上的速球，其中一半(6球)對手出棒，擊出2支安打。3日比賽大谷的3記160火球，也有2球被對手打出去，最快的那一球、也是大谷的第128球，被李大浩打成界外，至於第一局160公里的速球，則被中村晃擊成安打。
